Immediate gratification. That's what draws us to Twitter, to Facebook, etc... We put something out there and it gets a like or a retweet as if that is reassurance of our own importance. It's human nature for one to crave acceptance, to want confirmation that who they are or what they've done matters. I just find it odd, even in myself, that we need others to see us doing good in order for it to hold value or have merit. I'm trying to break myself of this way of thinking. It's the same as the saying "if a tree falls in the forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?" The answer is yes, yes it does. It has a deep impact which effects the surrounding area, it ripples through nearby trees. I guess what I'm trying to say is even if it appears that no one sees the good you are doing, it does not mean it goes unnoticed. It doesn't make the impact it has on the world any less important. Ideally though, the One whose acceptance, and confirmation you should be after is that of God, not man because God will be the one you have to answer to at the end of your life. The question you'll have to answer is "What did you do on earth in the time that I gave you? I was hungry, did you feed me? I was thirsty, did you give me drink? I was a stranger did you invite me in?
For I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home. -Matthew 25:35
That should be your answer. Giving. Service. Charity. Caring. Doing things deserving of gratification.
A gratification that isn't immediate but very much worth the wait.
